All I can figure is that it must be some kind of Den Mother, but I thought that was only for Cub Scouts. I don't recall having any women around in Boyscouts.

Still a really stupid design.

Glad I made it thru Boyscouts before the "political correctness" wave hit. Was fun to camp, shoot rifles, use bow and arrow, and just do "boy" stuff. We didn't have to worry about girls, aethiests, gays, etc.

They had a really good design that showed a boy scout in an old 1920's uniform helping a boy scout in a moden uniform climb a mountain. Guess we can't have anything that harkens back to a more self reliant era. This version is about as bad as the Plat eagle was.

Woman are involved in all aspects of scouting for the most part. Our pack has no political correctness and we still do all the cool stuff. camp, rifles, bow and arow, hicking. We strive to teach them alot that that they do not learn in school. if anyone has a problem with our pack we ask them very politly there are many other packs in the area that may be a better fit for them. It is what the leaders make of it.

Just thaught you would like to know there ar still packs out there just like when you and I were a kid(for the most part of course)

I'll buy the bejeezes out of this issue. there are probably lots of old scouts out there that will buy this issue also. I would guess it will have appeal after the mint sells out, sorta like the Lincoln Commemoratives from 2009.

But, I would certainly go scouting around that Den mother if she were my den mother! lol

I started out in Tiger Cubs which was for the real little tikes too young for Cub Scouts.

My mother(only parent raising me) was one of the group leaders along with a few fathers.

After "graduating" into cub scouts, my mother was was a Den leader as there weren't enough "men" willing to take on that role.

Sure enough after our Cub Master left the Troop due to his son getting older and moving on, NO ONE in the troop stepped up to take his role...So you guessed it, my Mother(passionate, hard worker) stepped up to the plate and became the only known female Troop Master at that time.

Im proud to say that I am proud of my Mother and the "guts" she has for taking on such a contraversial role and being great at it, while the other fathers didn't even make so much as an effort.

My mom single handedly saved that Troop and for that she should be praised!:36_3_13:

Having said all of that however, for "them" to put a woman on the Boy Scout coin is quite inappropriate.

The coin represents the three scout 'forces' Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts (sorry Brownies) Why the girl is saluting is beyond me, GS don't 'salute' they use a three finger greeting.

The reverse of the coin has the words 'Boy Scouts of America', the Boy Scout logo and motto.
I'll venture to guess the Girl Scout coin will have a similar (same?) obverse and GSoA, GS logo and motto on the reverse.

The tip off that the coin is a nod to all Scouts is the child depicted, two finger salute and striped kerchief, both Cub Scout affectations. As well as making it non-gender/race biased.

The coin covers the three basic programs of Boy Scouts:

Cub Scouts: boys in grades 1 through 5
Boys Scouts: boys ages 11 through 17
Venturing/Exploring: co-ed ages 14 through 20.

The Venturing program was started in 1998 and consist of posts or crews that focus on a specific career or hobby. Some crews focus on mountain climbing, Law Enforcement (I know two ex-Rangers that lead a crew), Sea Crews (usually in coastal cities and will always find a Naval Officer), and Aviation at regional airports (I know of several ex-Air Force and current commercial pilots that lead crews).

Think of it as a college ROTC program. It�s a great program that teaches teamwork and professional interaction between the sexes. These kids have a lot of respect for each other, and the ones that do go on to a military career will take that with them. Because when the time comes to call in Close Air Support, you won�t give a shit about whose flying support to save your ass. :36_1_25: Oh yes, there are women combat pilots flying multi-million dollar aircraft, and the only piece of ass you are thinking about is getting yours out in one piece. :moon:

I am with History Student and OldManSmith on this one. :bear_thumb: This coin will be big (100th anniversary) within the organization and there is much talk about it already. There are over 1.1 million adult volunteers and the U.S. Mint will only be issuing 350,000 coins. There are guys that pay big money for different Boy Scout patches, and these are just thread and cloth. So pick up as many coins as you can, and you will not have a hard time unloading them on some old timer after they are sold out. :36_1_34:

This is the 2nd time recently the recommendation of the CCAC has been "overruled" by PC punks in the administration (Giethner?), the 1st being the '09 proof plat. Extremely predictable, garlingly obvious what's going on... it seems they just cannot help themselves pushing and pushing the PC agenda.
This coin may be 'big' or may not, but what's for certain is that it woud have had much greater potential if they simply would have respected the committee's original choice, which was a timeless design.
